Funky Fungi

An artistic interpretation of the fungi in East Sooke Park.

Whenever I go on hikes, I have to consciously remind myself to look up every now and then. Being someone that often trips on roots and rocks, I spend the majority of my hikes staring at my feet and concentrating on not falling. Lately, I have been making an effort to pause, look up, and take in the scenery around me. While I likely still miss out on much that is happening in the sky, one advantage of being clumsy is that I notice many interesting things on the ground, including fungi.

While hiking the Mount Maguire trail in East Sooke Park (just outside of Victoria), I quickly became fascinated with the variety and quantity of fungi that lined the pathway. Much of it looked like it was from outer space!

The following is an unscientific account of what I saw.

Fungi or coral? It looks like it belongs underwater. They were also very stinky.
